Half-term isn’t over yet, Wakefield

It’s Wednesday.

Which means if you’ve got kids off school, you’re probably in one of two camps:

You’ve either had a lovely, wholesome half-term so far…

Or you’re already running out of ideas, snacks, patience, and clean washing.

Either way, there are still five days to go: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

So this week’s Wakefield Wire is a half-term rescue plan.

And because I’m simple, I still think the best way to plan a day off is around food.

Breakfast.
Something to do.
Lunch.
Something else to do.
Tea.
Collapse.

That’s the rhythm.

Here are a few ideas to get you through the rest of half-term.

Wednesday: do something easy

Wednesday doesn’t need to be heroic.

This is not the day to reinvent parenting or spend £90 on an “experience.”

Food idea

Do a cheap breakfast or lunch out.

The Ferry Boat in Stanley is a good shout if you want something simple and filling without making it into a big expensive day.

Or keep it even cheaper: breakfast at home, then go out after.

Thing to do

Wakefield Exchange has Dino Week running until Sunday.

There are free dinosaur-themed family activities, so it’s a good midweek option if you want to get out without overcomplicating the day.

Backup plan

Go to the library.

Underrated. Warm, quiet, free, and it counts as an activity.

Sometimes that’s all you need.

Thursday: make it a museum day

Thursday feels like a good day to do something that feels educational enough to make you feel like a responsible adult.

Food idea

Pack snacks before you leave.

This sounds obvious, but half-term gets expensive when every child suddenly needs a drink, crisps, a bun, another drink, and then chips.

Take a bag. Save yourself.

Thing to do

Try the National Coal Mining Museum.

They’ve got May Half Term activities running until Sunday, including outdoor activities and family things to do.

It’s one of those places that feels like a proper day out without having to drive miles away from Wakefield.

Backup plan

If you don’t fancy the museum, go for a “cake and walk” plan.

Cake first. Walk after.

It’s basically fitness.

Friday: castles, history and tiring them out

Friday is where you want to start draining the energy out of everyone before the weekend.

Food idea

Get sandwiches from somewhere local.

We like The Oven Door in Outwood, but wherever you are, the formula works:

Sandwich. Drink. Crisps. Sit somewhere. Done.

Thing to do

Pontefract Castle has family-friendly things on this half-term, including trails and tours.

Wakefield Museums & Castles also lists Dungeon Tours and Castle Explorer Tours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

This is a good one if you want something a bit different from another park trip.

Backup plan

Let the kids choose the walk.

Give them two options and make it feel like their decision.

You’re still in charge. They just don’t know it.

Saturday: Castleford Roman Festival

Saturday has a proper event on.

Food idea

Have a “big breakfast, late lunch” day.

Breakfast out if you fancy it, or breakfast at home if you want to save money.

Buttons Wakefield, Capri at The Vine, Ferry Boat, or whatever your local favourite is.

Thing to do

Castleford Roman Festival is on Saturday from 10am to 4pm at Castleford Precinct.

It’s free, family-friendly, and a good way to make Saturday feel like you’ve actually done something.

Lunch idea

Make Saturday the “eat while you’re out” day.

Grab something in Castleford, or take food with you and keep the cost down.

Backup plan

Castleford Museum has Roman games and pastimes running until Saturday too, so you can lean into the Roman theme if the kids are interested.

Sunday: final day before school mode

Sunday wants to be simple.

Don’t over-plan it. Don’t create a logistical nightmare. Don’t try to squeeze every last drop out of half-term.

Just have a decent day.

Food idea

Sunday picnic or easy picky tea.

Sandwiches, sausage rolls, fruit, crisps, dips, whatever is in the fridge.

You don’t need to make it Instagram-worthy.

You just need everyone fed.

Thing to do

Pontefract Castle’s pollinators trail runs until Sunday.

Or you could do Wakefield Exchange Dino Week if you haven’t been yet, because that also finishes Sunday.

Backup plan

Garden afternoon.

Paddling pool, barbecue, football, chalk, bubbles, music, family round, or just sitting outside doing very little.

Doing very little is still a valid Sunday plan.

Quick half-term hit list

If you just want the simple version, here it is:

Wednesday: Dino Week at Wakefield Exchange
Thursday: National Coal Mining Museum
Friday: Pontefract Castle
Saturday: Castleford Roman Festival
Sunday: Picnic, garden afternoon, or final Dino Week visit

Add food around it and you’ve got a plan.

That’s it for this week.

That’s it for this week.

Good luck with the rest of half-term.

Plan the food first. Fill the gaps after.
